Small Group Personal Training in San Diego

Get the attention of private training. The energy of a team. The results you've been looking for.

What Is Small Group Personal Training?

The Sweet Spot Between Private Training and Crowded Classes

Small group personal training is exactly what it sounds like - personal training in a small group. You train with 2-7 other people, but you still get your own customized program and direct coaching attention.

We call it semi-private training because you get the focused attention of private training without the private training price tag. Think of it as the sweet spot between working with a coach one-on-one and getting lost in a 30-person fitness class.

Here's what makes it different from everything else:

  • Not a class. Everyone isn't doing the same workout. You have your own program based on your goals.
  • Not crowded. 2-7 people max means your coach can actually watch you move and give you real feedback.
  • Not boring. Training with other people who are working just as hard as you creates energy you can't get alone.

If you've been stuck between "I can't afford a personal trainer" and "I don't want to figure this out alone," semi-private training is your answer.

The Science of Learning

Why Semi-Private Training Actually Works Better Than 1-on-1

Here's something most people don't know: semi-private training might actually be more effective than one-on-one personal training.

Sounds backwards, right? Stick with us.

There's a book we reference constantly called The Inner Game of Tennis by Timothy Gallwey. He's considered the pioneer of coaching, and one of his big lessons is this: fighting the urge to correct every single technical mistake a student makes.

When you're learning any skill - tennis, strength training, whatever - there will always be technical flaws. Always. Even advanced athletes have them.

But here's the thing: most learning happens subtly, under the hood. It's in the experience of practice. It's in feeling what your body does during a movement and making live adjustments. It's in focusing on the present demand of the exercise right now, not obsessing over perfection.

You don't need someone breathing down your neck for every single rep. You need space to explore the movement on your own.

In semi-private training, you get expert coaching when you need it. But you also get room to feel the movement, make your own adjustments, and build real body awareness. That's how you actually get better.

In 1-on-1 training? Your coach is right there for every rep. Which sounds great until you realize you never learn to trust yourself.

Why It Works

The Benefits You Don't Expect

You Celebrate Wins Together

Just hit a PR? It feels better when more people are around to celebrate with you. Showed up on a tough day when you really didn't want to? That's also a win worth celebrating. In semi-private training, you get nonjudgmental support and feedback from the people around you.

You Fail Forward With People Like You

When you train with a coach one-on-one, it can be intimidating. But in semi-private training, you look around and see other people at similar skill levels. You see them struggle sometimes. You see them figure it out. And it reminds you that everyone starts as a beginner.

You Get Your Own Pace

One big downside of group fitness classes? Fixed pacing. In our semi-private sessions, people have different goals. One person might be trying to lose weight. Another might be building muscle. You move at your pace. Not someone else's.

Is This You?

Who Small Group Training Is Perfect For

Here's what we've learned: semi-private training works for almost everyone.

At first, we thought it was best for extroverts. People who love being around others and feed off group energy.

But the truth is, everyone benefits. Extroverts love it because they get to connect. Introverts love it because the group is small enough to feel safe, and nobody forces you to be someone you're not.

Bottom line: You show up as you are. Some days you're fired up. Some days you're just trying to get through it. And that's okay. We're glad you're here either way.

You'll crush it in semi-private training if you:

  • βœ“ Want expert coaching without paying $150+ per session
  • βœ“ Work better with a few people around (not 30, not zero)
  • βœ“ Need accountability but also flexibility
  • βœ“ Want to learn proper form and actually understand what you're doing
  • βœ“ Prefer a gym that doesn't feel like a meat market
  • βœ“ Are open-minded and willing to show up consistently
  • βœ“ Want to be part of building a positive environment

You might not be a fit if you:

  • βœ— Need 100% undivided attention every second (that's what 1-on-1 is for)
  • βœ— Prefer working out completely alone with no interaction
  • βœ— Want to just follow along without thinking (that's what classes are for)

The Process

How Our Semi-Private Training Works

It's simple. You show up. You train. You get stronger.

You Get Your Own Program

When you join, you go through an initial consultation where we learn about your goals, your experience, and what you're working towards. From there, you get a customized program designed for you. One person might be working on building strength for a backpacking trip. Another might be rehabbing a knee injury. Different goals. Same session.

You Pick Your Workout

We have different workout options available - full-body, lower-ability, back-ability, arms, and more. When you come in, you pick the workout that fits your program. Every member gets a physical journal to track their workouts. Not an app. A real notebook. Why? Because your phone is a utility knife that leads to distractions.

You Train Towards Abilities

We love ability training. If you train towards an ability, that's actually the secret to longevity and progress. Forget obsessing over pain or how much weight you're lifting. Just work towards a goal. Like being able to squat all the way to the floor. Or hold a handstand. Or carry your groceries up three flights of stairs without getting winded.

Your Coach Knows You

You're not just another face in the crowd. Your coach has frequent check-ins with you. They know what you're working towards. They watch your form. They adjust your program as you progress. And because the group is small (2-7 people max), they can actually give you attention when you need it.

True Empowerment

We're Teaching You to Train Anywhere (Even Without Us)

Here's something most gyms won't tell you: we'd love to have you as a member forever. But we also recognize the reality of life.

People move. People travel. Priorities shift. Life happens.

That's why one of our goals is to equip you with the confidence and technical knowledge that lets you feel comfortable training in any gym available to you - or even at home if you need to.

We're not here to make you dependent on us. We're here to teach you how to train yourself.

You'll learn proper form. You'll understand why you're doing each exercise. You'll know how to adjust based on how your body feels. You'll have the tools to walk into any gym and know what to do.

In a way, we're putting ourselves out of a job. But that's okay.

Just pay it forward. If you ever meet someone who needs help getting started, mention us.

That's the kind of culture we're building - people helping people, not gyms trapping members.

Compare

Semi-Private vs. Everything Else

Let's be real about your options.

Semi-Private vs. 1-on-1 Personal Training

1-on-1 Personal Training:

  • β€’ You get 100% of your trainer's attention
  • β€’ Custom program built just for you
  • β€’ Usually $100-200+ per session
  • β€’ Can feel intense (someone watching every rep)
  • β€’ You never learn to work independently

Semi-Private Training:

  • β€’ You get expert coaching when you need it
  • β€’ Custom program built just for you
  • β€’ A fraction of the cost of 1-on-1
  • β€’ Space to explore movement on your own
  • β€’ Community support and energy
  • β€’ You actually learn to train yourself

The truth?

Unless you have a very specific situation (complex injury, high-level sport performance), semi-private training gets you better results for less money.

Semi-Private vs. Group Fitness Classes

Group Fitness Classes:

  • β€’ 15-30+ people in a room
  • β€’ Everyone follows the same workout
  • β€’ Instructor demos from the front
  • β€’ Fixed pace you have to keep up with
  • β€’ Drop-in model, usually $20-40/class
  • β€’ High energy but no customization

Semi-Private Training:

  • β€’ 2-7 people max
  • β€’ Everyone has their own program
  • β€’ Coach watches you move and gives real feedback
  • β€’ Move at your pace based on your ability
  • β€’ Consistent group that shows up together
  • β€’ High energy AND customization

The difference?

Classes are about getting a workout in. Semi-private is about getting better over time.

Semi-Private vs. Big Box Gyms

Big Box Gyms:

  • β€’ Cheap membership ($10-50/month)
  • β€’ Equipment everywhere
  • β€’ Crowded during peak hours
  • β€’ You're on your own to figure it out
  • β€’ No accountability

Semi-Private Training:

  • β€’ Higher investment
  • β€’ Never waiting for equipment
  • β€’ Small groups that feel like a team
  • β€’ Expert coaching every session
  • β€’ Built-in accountability

The reality?

Most people with big box gym memberships don't go. They waste $50/month on a card they swipe twice. Semi-private training costs more, but you actually show up and make progress.

Community Matters

The Culture We're Building

Let's talk about something that matters more than you think: culture.

Most people hire personal trainers as someone they can gossip with. Don't get us wrong - we love good banter with our clients. But that's not what we're building here.

We're building a culture of kind humans that lift each other up.

There's great advice we once heard: "If they gossip to you, they'll gossip about you."

We don't do that here.

You'll notice it the first time you train with us. The vibe is supportive. People encourage each other. They celebrate each other's wins. And when someone's having a hard day, nobody judges. We're all just glad they showed up.

Here's something else: the world is going more digital every year. And humans are losing the skill - yes, we said skill - of socializing.

Like anything, you use it or lose it.

Our small group environment creates the perfect space for light interaction. You're around people working towards similar goals. It's like being on a team, except everyone actually wants to complete the assignment.

You don't have to be best friends with everyone. But you will feel like you're part of something bigger than just "working out."

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people are in a semi-private training session?

Between 2-7 people. That's it. Small enough that your coach can give you real attention, but enough people that you get the energy and support of training with others.

Do I need experience to start?

Nope. All levels are welcome and encouraged - from total beginners to more advanced lifters. Most of our members are starting from scratch or coming back after years away from fitness. We actually love working with beginners because you haven't picked up bad habits yet.

What if I have an injury or limitation?

We specialize in injury prevention and rehabilitation. Seriously. Both of us (the owners) have our own experiences with personal injury and recovery. We know how to work around limitations, modify exercises, and help you rebuild strength safely. If you have an injury or chronic pain, semi-private training is actually a great fit because you get individualized attention while still being part of a group.

How often should I train?

Three days a week is the sweet spot for most people. But truthfully? Something is better than nothing. Do what you can. Training once a week can still get you significant results if you show up with intention. More is better if you have the time and energy, but there's no pressure. The goal is consistency, not perfection.

What if I can't make my scheduled time?

Life happens. We get it. We have a cancellation policy that's fair and reasonable. Just give us a heads up and we'll work with you to reschedule.

Do I get my own workout, or does everyone do the same thing?

You get your own workout based on your goals and ability level. Everyone in the session might be doing different exercises. One person might be squatting. Another might be doing kettlebell swings. Someone else might be working on mobility. But you're all training together in the same space with the same coach.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely. Training with a friend or partner is great. Just let us know when you book.

What should I bring to my first session?

Just yourself, workout clothes, and water. We provide everything else. You'll get a physical journal for tracking your workouts, so you don't need to bring anything to write on.

Is this like CrossFit or bootcamp classes?

Nope. CrossFit and bootcamp classes are group workouts where everyone does the same thing at the same time. Semi-private training is individualized programming with a small group of people working on their own programs. You're not competing against anyone. You're just focused on getting better than you were last week.

What makes Real-time Strength different from other small group training gyms in San Diego?

Our philosophy. We're not here to beat you into the ground with brutal workouts. We're not obsessed with weight or reps or Instagram-worthy transformations. We're focused on ability training, injury prevention, and helping you move better so you can show up more present in every area of your life. We also care deeply about the culture we're building. You won't find gossip or judgment here. Just good humans working on becoming stronger versions of themselves.
